Daughter sparks debate after asking father to pay $200k for destination wedding

The journey to wedded bliss is often celebrated with love, as it should be, but the significant costs associated with weddings can quickly turn joy into stress.

One father shared his frustration on Reddit, explaining the dilemma he faced when confronted with his daughter’s extravagant wedding plans.

This dad, from New York, posted on the AITA (Am I The A*****e) subreddit, detailing how he had initially promised to pay for his daughter’s wedding—a commitment many parents make to support their children as they start married life.

However, his generosity was put to the test when he learned just how elaborate his daughter’s wedding vision was.

Rather than a local celebration, his daughter dreamed of a lavish destination wedding in the stunning landscapes of New Zealand, with a guest list ranging from 100 to 200 people!

The price tag? A whopping $200,000. This left the father at a crossroads, torn between wanting to fulfill his daughter’s dream and his hesitation about such an extravagant display of wealth. He even referred to it as “burning money,” fearing it might alienate family members.

He wrote, “My wife feels I should go through with it because we can afford it, but I think it’s a pointless show of wealth. Now my daughter isn’t speaking to me, and neither is my wife. So, I’m wondering: Should I just bite the bullet and burn this money, even if it means alienating family members, just to make my daughter’s dream wedding a reality?”

Redditors were quick to share their opinions. One commented, “If she can’t afford a destination wedding herself, she shouldn’t be having one. It sounds harsh, but it’s true. Plus, there’s all the extra money for flights, hotels, and other expenses. Is she paying for her own ticket or do you have to cover that too? And what about her fiancé’s?”

They continued, “The fact that she’s throwing a tantrum and not speaking to you suggests she doesn’t deserve it. I believe we’re not entitled to our parents’ money. I don’t expect a penny from my dad, even if he passes away.”

Another Redditor suggested a compromise: the father could contribute a specific amount that he was comfortable with, allowing his daughter to plan her wedding within that budget.

“Set a clear budget for how much you’re willing to give, and let her know. Anything over that should be covered by her and her fiancé. If she wants a grand wedding, she can pay for it,” they advised.

As of now, the father hasn’t provided any updates, except to say that his daughter is calling him a jerk and still refuses to speak to him. How ungrateful!
